Welcome to this edition of our InTouch Newsletter
Our cover photo has been kindly supplied via Club President, Jerry Rowberry and shows Will Jordan, Mike Cron and Brad Mooar in their CFC jerseys for their ‘Club Night’ during Test week in Auckland.
Firstly, our apologies for the lack of newsletter last week – unfortunately the dreaded covid struck again. We continue to see many businesses, families and friends struggling with illness and staffing issues as the wave of current bugs and viruses continues to take their toll. Please look out for your fellow club members, friends, family and sponsors – we all have a role to play in supporting our community and if you can help out, we encourage you to do so!
From a rugby perspective, our Premier Men & Women have both now finished their season, with our Colts, Crocs, Nomads and Choppers into their final two weeks before the senior season wraps up on the 23rd July.
Prizegiving for our Senior Rugby & Netball teams has been set for Saturday 13th August and tickets are now available to purchase – please come and support this event and celebrate with our club members as we recognise our standout club players, coaches, and supporters for this season. If you are not part of a team, you can request a ticket by emailing rugby@christchurchpark.co.nz
Our junior teams are on school holiday break, with their games recommencing on the 30th July and their season running through until 3rd September (with the 10th September to be kept free as a rain date).
We still have lots of events and activities planned, so we will continue to send out regular newsletters and would ask our club members to support the club, by attending functions and games. We will advertise weekly opening times via social media and newsletter – so come and join us when you can, we’d love to see you!
Our Friday “Nights Under Lights” games for our junior teams have been a huge success and we will offer these wherever possible for home and visiting teams who are keen to make use of this option.
We are also delighted to be hosting Christ College vs STAC 1st XV game on Saturday 30th July (see below for more info). A massive thank you to Matt Mustchin (Chops), for driving this event and making it happen!
The club is currently missing one of our key staff members, as our Housekeeper Sheryl, remains on family leave, to care for her brother, in the final stages of his battle with lung cancer. Sheryl does an amazing job and is very valued member of our team. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sheryl and her family at this difficult time.
We would also like to acknowledge Bridgette, who recently started working for us, as part of our housekeeping team. Bridgette has really stepped up to the challenge and is doing an excellent job of maintaining our motels and facilities (largely by herself), while the motels are trading at nearly 100% occupancy. Bridgette also supports our kitchen when needed and her dedication and work ethic are amazing – thank you Bridgette, you are an absolute legend!
FROM THE SIDELINE
Congratulations to Travis Moody who played his 100th match for the Christchurch Premier Reserve Croc’s on Saturday.
A tremendous achievement of endeavour and loyalty to this team over 7 seasonsHe was an integral part of a great Championship winning team in 2017.Travis has been the heart and soul of the great camaraderie and social aspect that is a big part of this team.
In the past year he has transformed himself from a prop to a Lock, losing 50kg in the process. His parents have also been great supporters of this team, having attended every match over this period of time. It was fitting that the lads could pull of an old fashioned win for him on Saturday 8-7 .
Well done Travis and thank you for what you have contributed to your team and Club.David StuthridgeSponge
THIS WEEKS DRAWS
UPCOMING EVENT
Saturday 30th July, Christs College V St Andrews’ College, 2:45pm KO
This 1st XV game has been moved to Chch Park #1 due to Christ’s ground being unavailable due to some building works at the school.
This is a great opportunity for CFC to re connect with the two schools that have a long tradition with our club.
To mark this occasion, it would be great to see as many Old Cols from both schools who are involved with our club at this game. This will give you an opportunity to re connect but also show case our club to these players as we look to re-build over the next few years.
There are some very exciting players in both teams with many players who have current connections to CFC, like college loose forward Tom Thyne, son of Dean and Winger PJ Palamo, a former junior and at STAC is Josh Carr, son of Chalky and brother to Jamie, Fullback Tom Ruhiwa, son of former CFC player Jamie and First Five Sam Mustchin, son of former player and current colts coach Matt.
So please mark this in your calendars to try and get to Chch Park for a great day of Rugby.
THE DAVID BURKE MEMORIAL AWARD
It’s that time of the year again where we ask you all to consider nominations for the
following award. All information that you need to make a nomination is in the below text.
We look forward to hearing from you in the very near future as closing date is Friday 29th July 2022.
Doctor David Burke (“Burkey”) was the CFC doctor from 1992 until his tragic and untimely
death in 2005. Burkey was a man that continually gave others his time and always, in a
completely unselfish and unheralded manner, put the club and its players’ interests and
concerns ahead of his own. Never once did he seek recognition or reimbursement for his
services, which it must be said went far beyond his professional calling. Indeed, he became
a friend and confidante of many of his patients.
Burkey is certainly a man who should not be forgotten, and it is for reasons of honouring his
memory that the David Burke Memorial Award has been commissioned by the Club.
The award is to be presented to a member or friend of the Club who epitomises the
qualities most remembered to have been found in Dr David Burke. Someone who
throughout the period of the preceding year has continually given their time, energy,
services and support to the players of the Club in a quiet, understated, and supportive
manner.
The nominees should fit the following criteria:
1. A member or friend of the CFC (need not be a member per se).
2. Puts the club and players interests and time ahead of his or hers.
3. Understated, supportive, friend of the players.
Please submit your nomination(s) in writing to the Club before the closing date by emailing: rugby@christchurchpark.co.nz
We are delighted to welcome Naylor Love as a new main club sponsor, with a specialist focus on women’s rugby.
We have been working for some time with Lynda from Naylors, to get a sponsorship package finalised and in addition to the sponsorship funds provided, we have many members of the Naylors team who are General Members of our club. They will be at the club regularly supporting our functions and events and hosting activities to support the local community and their employees.
Naylors is one of the largest and most trusted commercial construction experts in NZ, with over 100 years in the industry, starting in Dunedin in 1910. Their capabilities and expertise see them well placed to assist with any commercial construction requirements and we encourage our club community to reach out to the Naylors team if you have any projects being considered. More information about the Naylors team can be found via their website Our Capabilities - Naylor Love, Commercial Construction
